Taking in the Sunset

It is light that reveals, light that obscures, light that communicates. It is light I “listen” to. The light late in the day has a distinct quality, as it fades toward the darkness of evening. After sunset there is a gentle leaving of the light, the air begins to still, and a quiet descends. I see magic in the quiet light of dusk. I feel quite, yet intense energy in the natural elements of our habitat. A sense of magic prevails. A sense of mystery. Front Range Sunset

After two days of snow and an accumulation of 7-14 inches, depending on where you were in the city of Fort Collins, we had clear skies and sunshine. It was 6 degrees yesterday when I crawled out of bed at 6:00 am. The high temperatures never rose above freezing. But with the warm Colorado sunshine the snow quickly melts as natures prepares for the next snowfall. We are expecting 30% chance of snow again today.

As the above image shows most of my images are not of iconic or exotic places. They are taken close to home. I try to get out and explore whats’ near and always coming across new places, at least to me. I wander through the nature areas, local parks and the Old Town area of Fort Collins. If I have my camera with me I know there is an image to be made. Anyway here is the Colorado Front Range just after sunset last night. It was 18 when I took this shot. I must admit, as I walked back to the car I was wishing I was shooting a sunset in Key West. Maybe someday.

It’s Cold Down Here

Mary’s Lake at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal

I’m now in Phoenix visiting my parents. I headed out for some morning sunrise photos and froze out there. I was not expecting the weather to be this cold. It was 27 degrees yesterday morning and about 33 this morning. May have to go back to Colorado to get warm. But, I am enjoying time with my family. This image was taken a couple yeras ago at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal near Denver. Have a super day.

A Few Favorites

At this time of the year a few photographers begin posting their best images from the past year, something I’ve never done. Well, I thought I would look back over the year and pick what I considered are my best. I started adding images to a quick collection and by the time I went through the year I had 67 images in my collection. I’m not that good so I turned off the computer. This was not going to be easy.

The next day I made a pass through these 67 images and dropped it down to 48. Waited for the next day and repeated the process until I had whittled it down to these 12. I finally just picked one image from each month. It was more difficult than I thought and not because I have that many good images. It occurred to me I was selecting images I liked and not necessarily the best or of the highest quality. I therefore changed my criteria to select the ones I liked, my favorites, rather than my best. Some are HDR images as I played the software and the one image of the flowers and bee was taken with the G12, everything else was with the D300. Even after posting these images I will want to add others and delete these. Never satisfied.
