An Observation

Hiawatha Lake

Hiawatha Lake

There seems to be a correlation between the increase in my age and a decrease in  sunrise images and increase of sunsets images. Now at Momo Lolos coffeehouse and listening to a pianist and flutist duet. Love the change from the piped music we find most of the time.

Family and community are an essential part of my life as well as my solitude. There are some who avoid solitude, finding it uncomfortable. And, there are some who avoid communities, finding it uncomfortable. I need both. Community and fellowship helps me to appreciate the solitude and quiet. While the solitude and quiet help me appreciate community.

The Quiet Place

The Quiet Place

The Quiet Place

I like to start my day with a few minutes of quiet contemplation and this is usually where I practice. I have a sort of bay window in my bedroom, about 18 inches of space to collect dust. I have a battery powered candle sitting which I use sometimes to change the mood. I’ve had the wicker rocker now for several years and have it broken in to fit my tush. It is beginning to be brittle so every so often I find pieces on the floor. This window faces the south-southeast so early morning sun will be my companion during the summer. I use the fleece blanket, draped over the end of my bed, to wrap around my legs on those colder winter mornings. It is my quiet place.

So Much for the Quiet

St. Josephs Catholic Church

St. Josephs Catholic Church

As some of you know I look for places to find a bit of quiet, a physical place with little external noise. I can find these in some churches. This past week in search for quiet I went to a local catholic church. The first thing i notice as I walked in was yhe quiet. I could hear every breath I took. This was what I was looking for. After about 10 minutes of this quiet in walked these five ladies who then proceeded to pray the rosary. So much for the quiet.

Altar Bells

Altar Bells

Altar Bells

An altar or sanctus bell is rung during the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, Lutheranism, in Methodism, and in the Anglican Communion. After a little research I found the reasons for ringing bell; first, to create a joyful noise to the Lord; second, the Church bells ringing signaled those not able to attend Mass that something supernatural was taking place. And, they have been a part of the Mass for about 800 years. If you look closely you will notice the bells are different sizes and therefore give different tones when rung. The gentle ringing of these bells is really not disturbing but I suppose could be startling to those who are not expecting it.

My roots are from a Protestant childhood. I converted to Catholicism in my mid thirties, at a time when the church provided much needed support and growth. I call myself a Christian but with reservations with the actions of some professed Christians. I seldom attend Mass anymore for personal reasons, yet I do search out churches where quiet can be found. Just as in nature it is here that I can read, write, spend time in pray, meditation and contemplation. Finding these places helps keep me connected to the Divine and sometimes learn about sanctus bells.

Don’t Stop

Prayer Time

Prayer Time

I saw a sign yesterday posted out in front of a church, it read “If you’ve been praying for snow, please stop.” But, because of our need for moisture in Colorado, I say keep it going. We had about 5-6 inches of snow through the night, that works for me. Anymore than that I’ll be complaining.  The temperatures are not bad at 16 degrees (F). Stay warm for those caught in frigid weather. and enjoy this last Friday of January 2014!

Quiet Time

Prayer Time

Prayer Time

The clouds moved into the area late yesterday afternoon. Rain started falling around 8:00 last night and continued throughout the night. Temperature this morning was just above freezing. By midmorning the rain stopped and the skies began to clear. As I look west I can see a dusting of snow along our Colorado Front Range. Winter has made it’s presence known. It’s a quiet sort of day. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

The Chair

The Chair

I acquired a new chair about 4 weeks ago. It’s a recliner/rocker and fits my posterior nicely. someone was throwing it away so I hauled it upstairs, bought some upholstery cleaner, scrubbed it down with a sponge, vacuumed it out and poof, we have a new chair for me. Looks like new! One of the things I miss about my condo back in Colorado was the bay window in my bedroom that faced southeast. I enjoyed spending my mornings sitting in a similar rocker with my latte, having quiet time, or reading, or writing and watching the sun come up. It’s a wonderful way to start my day.

Happy New Years to all my blogging friends!
