    Lovely Clouds

Get a good pair of walking shoes and… fall in love.

    Abbas Attar

Kyger Open Space is an approximately 150-acre parcel west of downtown Windsor. The property contains a water storage reservoir and associated pump infrastructure, open fields, drainages and wetlands, and paved and unpaved trails. These trails are flat and easy to walk, my kind of trails. 😁 And, it’s a good location for cloud photos!

I’m off to the tennis courts to practice taking action photos, then get in some reading and journaling. Meet a friend for lunch later today. Have a great Friday!

    Then things changed…

The day began as I watched the predawn colors on the eastern horizon then the sunrise from the ridge above the reservoir. I sat on the bench watched and listened. An owl, perched on the dead cottonwood tree, sharing with the world their joy for this new day. I enjoyed the warm sunshine and a light breeze we had all morning, drinking coffee and reading on the porch. It is what’s known as a perfect Colorado fall day. Then things changed…

By mid afternoon dark clouds had moved in, temperatures began to drop and the cold wind brought its power and authority to our attention. I put on a coat rather than a jacket and stepped outside for my walk. The cold wind stung my face and my nose began to run. The wind blew the still clinging leaves from their branches and sent them sailing in every direction. Some danced around me as if I was that important. My body knows this feeling as we move more into the later stages of fall and the promise of the colder season that quickly approaches, winter. Did I mention it’s cold?

    The new norm

Dixon Reservoir and the Pineridge Nature Area

I have always loved to watch white, fluffy, billowing the clouds. This morning at Red Fox Meadows the clouds seemed whitier, fluffier, billowingier, and dramatic, against the blue blue sky. Not sure if that’s due to my time in isolation or the cleaner air or both. But, it seemed to me everything was crisp, felt clean and fresh. I apologize because I’m unable to express what it is. I will say this, if this is the new norm then I don’t want the old norm.

Later I drove to the Pineridge Nature Area and glad I did. It’s a nature area of mixed trails around the Dixon Reservoir and along the small ridge in the background of this image. People were out walking and running these trails. It is up against the foothills so away from traffic. It was serene for me and I plan on returning. It will be a good place to exercise and get me out the neighborhood. You may see a few more images from this area.

    New Natural Area

With every grandparent, parent, sibling, boyfriend or girlfriend in town for graduation I decided to venture off to Arapahoe Bend Natural Area. It was much quieter! A couple years ago this reservoir named Rigden Reservoir did not exist was a mix of open fields and gravel pits. It was a haven for meadowlarks, blackbirds, prairie dogs, rabbits and raptors. I was surprised to find that is another natural area. The City of Fort Collins asked citizens to submit names and Topminnow Natural Area was chosen. They have built a 2.2 mile paved walking loop around the reservoir. So, I walked it and found this scene. I liked the light rain falling along the Front Range and cropped it to give it a more panoramic feel.
