    Enjoy the Surprises

    We humans can easily lose our perspective on our humble place in the universe. We get locked up in our heads, prisoners of our limited ideas and thoughts, cutting ourselves off from the wider world of experience. We forget or are simply unaware that we are part of an immense cosmic history that continues to stretch into a vast unknown future.

    I cringe when I hear anyone claim they know how a situation will turn out, how people will react, or the course nature will take. Even when challenged about their assumptions, they will say yes they know. Way too much ego for me and a total turnoff. I admit we can make pretty accurate assumptions based on past evidence and experiences but we cannot predict the future. Just ask any weather forecaster. So, I try to live life with the awareness that I don’t know all that my ego would like me to think I think I know, or believe all my assumptions and opinions. And, in truth those assumptions and opinions are evolving over time. When I remain in a place of humility, accepting my limited ideas and thoughts as just that, I am open to the wider experiences life offers. Then, I’m in a place to watch as the day unfolds and enjoy the surprises, like soft pastel pink clouds outside the coffee shop! Happy Valentine’s Day!

    Dare to be Ourselves

    Same place, different day, different canvas, different colors and clouds than yesterday. Makes me smile when I think about the constant of change and variety of scenes within nature. As I stepped out of the car this morning at Pineridge Natural Area, I noticed two young women wrapped in blankets getting ready to sit on the bench and watch the sunrise. One of them said good morning Monte. Surprised, I asked how they knew me. They said I met them last winter up here and they still had my card. When they saw me get out of the car they figured it was me. So, I find it interesting that within many of us is a desire to be known by others. While at the same time we can be known by people and never be aware of it. Which leads me to ask myself this morning why I need to worry about it. Seems Mary Sarton is correct, we just need to dare to be ourselves and let life be what it is.

    Cold weather is heading this way so it will be frigid the next four days. For sure two blankets sleeping weather. Excited to meet with my oldest daughter, Christine, for lunch today. Stay warm and be yourself!

    Sometimes They’re Even Good!

    Wanted to share these words of wisdom from a comment our friend Earl made on one of my posts. He is referring to surprises in life, those wanted and not wanted. I am currently finding surprises in my life that at first seem unwanted but in some ways have turned out to be good. He has reminded me of that. His words also reminded me of the fondness I have for those surprises we can find in our photography. For me they happen most often when I venture out in nature with my camera, open to what my heart can see and accept. While living in Ohio for two and a half years I was able to experience trees and plants I was not familiar with. I loved what I was seeing and experiencing for the first time. As I reflect back it was on these walks when I first began to ask the questions: What surprise is nature going to offer me today? What will I expect and accept? You never know, sometimes they’re even good!
