An evolving practice…

Cold Winter Sunset

There was a time when my nightly routine would be to watch the news and then head off to bed. But, I became aware that I was filling my mind with plenty of junk prior to my time in dreamland, which was mentally unhealthy and I’m not talking about the commercials. That routine was abandoned over 25 years ago, so was the television. I now have an evolving practice that includes a quiet time where I sit in silence and then a time to reflect over the days events. I look at how I lived my day. What were the positive things I did and what were the negative things? It is through this evolving practice where I look for ways to improve in how I live this short and precious life.

Retired. Having fun with photography. Journal daily. Meditate daily. Learning haiku. Have a love for fountain pens.

Doing away with the television was a good step in reclaiming and prioritizing our time. Yes, we miss a few things and aren’t as up to date on “pop culture” as we might be. But that isn’t necessarily a negative. The content of television these days has gotten so caught up in the “look at me” hype and constant advertising and promotion that any “value” is lost among the clutter. Watching the “news” before going to bed is about the worst thing you can do for your mental state!

I only worry that I’ve simply replaced the TV time with other forms of entertainment, like reading and listening to music. But being able to decide for myself how to spend my time instead of having my attention dominated by the media is the positive result. Using your time to reflect on the day is a great idea and something I should and will think more about.

Yes, the content of television is my primary reason to move onward. I now can use this time for other things I consider more positive things in life. Having coffee or tea with a friend or taking my camera for a walk are good examples.

I watch the local news in the morning but that’s it for ‘news’. I do watch TV in bed, it puts me to sleep… seriously.

Your comment reminds me of another reason I no longer have a television. When I was married we had three televisions in three separate areas. I could sit in the living room and hear all three on the same channels but no one in the same area.

We cut the cord for cable not long ago. I am not ready to give up TV completely, too many creative shows I still enjoy. But I do admire the practice you have created. Wisdom to consider for sure!

I do admit that some channels offer very good content and are educational. I am also aware of the high cost some people pay to have all the channels and internet. Want to spend my money on other things that have more value to me.
