Recent events show that not everyone’s inner voice is rooted in morality, so Shel Silverstein’s advice might not always lead to commendable outcomes. Some individuals possess inner voices that can be evil, bigoted, judgmental, or greedy, leading them to have a personal and biased sense of right and wrong. In such cases, it would be better for everyone if they chose not to listen to their inner voice.

I read his quote from a place where my understanding of the inner voice has more to do with the core of who we are, the ground of our being. If we are not listening to that inner voice, then we are most likely listening to the self-centered and wounded ego. It seems any narcissist, and there are many in this world, only listens to their ego. In fact I’m not sure the narcissist is capable of listening to their inner voice or knows that it even exists. As you say those who listen to their egos, believing it is their inner voice, can be evil, bigoted, judgmental, or greedy, leading them to have a personal and biased sense of right and wrong. Wounded people do not make good leaders, and unfortunately, we have some wounded people in leadership roles. Your response tells me you are listening to the voice within you! You know what is right for you. For that I am thankful!

I am not convinced that everyone possesses inherent goodness at their core, nor do I believe that their negative actions stem solely from being out of touch with it. Just as there is light, there is also darkness. I am convinced that evil exists and is a real trait in some individuals, who even celebrate and nurture it. I take a pragmatic view on this issue.

I absolutely love this image! My inner voice is strong. I sometimes overrule it and eventually admit that I should have listened. Have a great week! We’re getting lots of rain and my inner voice says ‘let it rain’. lol
