We have to change…

A lot of our fear, hatred, anger, and feelings of separation and alienation come from the idea that we are separate from the planet. We see ourselves as the center of the universe and are concerned primarily with our own personal survival. If we care about the health and well-being of the planet, we do so for our own sake. We want the air to be clean enough for us to breathe. We want the water to be clear enough so that we have something to drink. But we need to do more than use recycled products or donate money to environmental groups. We have to change our whole relationship with the Earth.

Thich Nhat Hanh

I guess if I were to have a resolution or goal for the coming year it would be to continue the change in my relationship with Mother Earth, not just in my thinking but in my actions.

Retired. Having fun with photography. Journal daily. Meditate daily. Learning haiku. Have a love for fountain pens.

I might amend your caption to state that “We ALL Have To Change.” We’re in such a mess now that talking about it won’t do it, a few people doing a few things won’t make a difference, and even a few countries doing something won’t help. As Greta Thunburg has said (and I count her as a hero and voice of reason in this discussion) all that is happening now is a lot of “blah, blah blah.” (Washington Post 12/27/21)

That said, doing our part is pretty much what we as individuals can do, and that is a good place to start.

So, we agree that the first place to start is with us. Doing our part may be something quite simple such as lifestyle changes or taking on a role such as Greta. It also includes supporting those who are taking action, speaking out or making lifestyle changes of their own.

I wonder how many “western” families integrate this philosophy into their household, the upbringing of their kids, etc. We really need a restart from the ground up (which many movies have suggested in quite dramatic ways)

Totally agree, Mark. There may be more than we suspect and I’m hoping on that. Some of the younger people I talk to are becoming more aware of this need to connect with the natural world. I sat, bring it on!
